When ceramic materials are reduced in sub-micron scale, the size effect such as high strength and ductility appears. To bulk up nano-sized materials having improved properties, three-dimensional structures can be used. In order for size-induced strengthening to be maintained in three-dimensional ceramic nano-architectures, failure of the structures have to be initiated by fracture, not by buckling. In this experiment, compression tests were conducted on three-dimensional ceramic nano-architectures satisfying the geometric conditions in which buckling does not occur to see manifestation of size-induced strengthening in 3D structures.
