Content traffic has become a major burden to the Internet from the Internet service providers (ISPs) point of view, developing strong needs for network optimization on content delivery network (CDN). An ISP CDN provides the possibility of optimizing the content traffic in an ISP network, leaving opportunities for further optimization of content traffic among ISPs. CDN interconnection (CDNI) is being introduced at IETF as one of the most feasible solutions to reduce Internet exchange (IX) traffic by federation of multiple CDNs. It defines CDNI to be capable of interconnecting heterogeneous CDNs. We implement an IETF standard-capable CDNI gateway and conduct a CDNI field trial with two major ISPs of South Korea. In this paper, we show how the CDNI gateway interconnects between ISP networks and analyze the traffic reduction rate of CDNI systems on the IX traffic. According to our analysis on the result, CDNI can reduce more than 40% of content traffic on the IX point compared to legacy CDN systems.
