The effects of an axial magnetic field applied to a fiber laser cavity on the polarization characteristics of the fiber laser output are investigated. The experimental and theoretical results show sensitive changes in the polarization mode beat frequency as a function of the applied magnetic field. (C) 1995 Optical Society of America
