The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm is a powerful, versatile tool for electromagnetic analysis. In this work, the stability of FDTD is analyzed regarding metamaterials and improved by stably interpolating adjacent fields. The interpolation operation was applied to metamaterials such as the invisibility cloak, the field rotator, and the field concentrator. As a result, field distortion disappeared and computation efficiency was increased as large spatial step sizes became available. The proposed method also resulted in smaller dispersion compared with the conventional FDTD method. The suggested method is applicable to other metamaterials and can be used to efficiently analyze large-scale metamaterial structures with FDTD
