Metal nanocrustals have received wide attention due to their unique and useful electronic, optical, and magnetic properties which can be applied to various fields. In particular, metal nanocrystals with controlled size and shape exhibit outstanding physical and chemical properties that are fairly different from those of bulk countparts. Therefore, controllable synthesis of metal nanocrystals has attracted attention from researchers over the past two decades, because they usually show a combination of the properties associated with different metals or metal oxide. Interestingly, in many cases, there is a great enhancement in specific catalytic properties upon metal nanocrystals due to synergistic effects. On the other hand, synthesis of high-qualified metal nanocrystal with controllable size, morphology, composition and structure has thus far not been well developed. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis focuses on the development of the high-qualified metal nanocrystals via colloidal chemical synthetic method and their application to electrocatalyst and chemical catalyst. Additionally, this thesis focuses on controlling the shape and combination of metal nanocrystal with other metal or metal oxide and improving the catalytic activity and stability at the same time. In chapter 2, convex polyhedral Au@Pd core-shell NCs enclosed predominantly by high-index {12 5 3} facets were synthesized under aqueous room-temperature conditions through the simultaneous reduction of Au and Pd ions in the presence of octahedral Au NC seeds. The NCs evolved from octahedral NC seeds to form first rhombic dodecahedral NCs then hexoctahedron-like NCs through the preferential deposition of metals onto the growing seed surfaces along the <111> direction. The convex Au@Pd NCs exhibited electro-catalytic properties toward ethanol oxidation that were distinctly higher than those of the other Au@Pd NCs. Because the synthesized high-index-faceted NCs display unique structural and cat...
