Virtual garment has been extensively used in various applications such as game, movie, and virtual fashion. This thesis deals with two significant issues on virtual garments: efficiency in cloth simulation and applicability in CAD/CAM. For efficiency, we propose a novel multi-resolution method to efficiently perform large-scale cloth simulation. We identify that solutions of the linear system of cloth simulation are smooth in certain regions of the cloth mesh and solve the linear system on those regions in a reduced solution space. Then we reconstruct the original solutions by performing a simple interpolation from solutions computed in the reduced space. In order to identify regions where solutions are smooth, we propose simplification metrics that consider stretching, shear, and bending forces, as well as geometric collisions. Because of the reduced computations, we achieve a performance improvement by a factor of up to one order of magnitude, with a little loss of simulation quality. For applicability, we propose an automated 3D garment fitting system which can fit a garment model dressed on a reference human model onto a target human model. The proposed method can transfer garment models between human models without any user guidance, even when human models have various poses. First, we segment reference and target human models using Morse function and Reeb graph. Next, we build correspondence information between torsos of reference and target human models. By this information, the torso part of garment is fitted onto the target human model and the rest parts of the garment model are transformed using coordinate transform to cylindrical coordinates. Last, we resolve abnormalities of fitted garment model by smoothing and cloth simulation. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can transform garment models between various-posed human models without any inputs from end-users.
