dc.description.abstractTwo tandem flexible filaments in a uniform flow were numerically simulated using an improved version of the immersed boundary (IB) method. The flexible flapping filament was found to interact with the vortices that were shed by an upstream filament via either constructive or destructive modes. These interaction modes gave rise to significant differences in the drag force acting on the downstream flapping filament. The constructive mode increased the drag force, while the destructive mode decreased the drag force. Drag on the flexible bodies was examined as a function of the Reynolds number, the streamwise and spanwise gap distances, and the bending coefficient of the flexible filaments.-
