In the semi-automatic VLM-ST process, a material in the form of a plate is cut into a Unit Shape Layer (USL) with thick layers and sloping surfaces in accordance with a CAD model using a four-axis synchronized hotwire cutter and each USL is then bonded together by hand and stacked with the aid of a building board and a pilot pin. As a result of repetition of this process, a three-dimensional part is rapidly fabricated. The available model size of the semi-automatic VLM-ST apparatus is 200 mm × 180 mm in a plane and the maximum building height of the model is not limited. Because the semi-automatic VLM-ST process uses thick-layered materials and is not limited in height, it is possible to fabricate rapidly the object larger than 600 mm high. This paper describes the fast fabrication of large-sized physical model from aerial-photographing 3D terrain data using the semi-automatic VLM-ST process in connection with the reverse engineering technology. The terrain model is 1050 mm × 637 mm × 160 mm in size and its reduced scale is 1 to 10,000. From the fabricated physical model from aerialphotographing 3D terrain Data, it has been shown that the semi-automatic VLM-ST process in connection with the reverse engineering technology is such a fast and efficient process that a large object can be manufactured easily in comparison with the other existing RE-RP connected manufacturing systems.
