dc.description.abstract | Prediction of distribution of reinforcement fibers in composite materials is important since it affects the mechanical property and surface quality. In the present study, an existing fiber flow model, previously proposed for compression molding of thermoplastic composites, was modified to apply for thermoset composites. The modified fiber flow model was adopted in rigid thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis to predict fiber distribution in compression molding of sheet molding compounds(SMC). Two flow coefficients involved with the current model in characterizing the flow of fibers during compression molding of thermostet composites were determined by a numerical search scheme based on minimizing the errors between the numerically predicted values and the measured data obtained from experiments. Also, the influence of fiber flow coefficients on the predicted distribution of fibers was numerically investigated. The numerical results showed that the numerical search scheme was appropriate in determining volume fiber distributions and that the current model will be useful in design of composite materials processing to enhance its mechanical property and surface quality. | - |
