Multimedia service is getting popular and users of multimedia application also demand high quality of service. For providing multimedia service, lots of resources such as large scale of storage devices are required. In order to utilize them effectively and support better service, adequate resource management is essential. In case of distributed multimedia service system, a client’s request needs to be well distributed multimedia data among multimedia servers in terms of load balancing. As the internet is used widely, it is general to provide multimedia service over the Internet. Network traffic increases in proportion to the increase of the number of Internet user. A great deal of work on measuring and analyzing the network status and performance have been conducted. So it is possible to explain the performance of the Internet in part. In case of network status, even though instability can be seen, it is necessary to collect network status data and use them since network status becomes an important factor in providing high quality of multimedia service to the large number of Internet client. Multimedia application and services provides from a relatively long distance server, running on wide area network(WAN) are not independent of the current network status. Application and services considering accurate network status are required to provide better services. Several video-on-demand(VoD) systems consider server load and network status for effective resource management and better service quality. However, developed video-on-demand systems are ones built on local area or do not consider network status as a information for choosing a server. In this thesis, one of methods to get network status information is discussed and it is applied to select a server providing multimedia service.
