Simple method for estimating distortion caused by DCT coefficient drop in compressed domain

A simple estimation method of the distortion caused by the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient dropping for rate adaptation is presented. The proposed method is based on the investigation of statistical and empirical properties of the distortion, and then modelled in a monotonically decreased manner. It is expected that the method can be employed to allocate effectively the distortion among frames in coefficient drop transcoding applications.
