The forecasting compensatory control strategy based on the time series analysis is applied to cutting process in order to reduce the irregularities of the finished surface of workpiece. The relative displacement between the tool and the workpiece is modeled by univariate time series analysis, and the forecasting compensatory control equations are derived. During face cutting operations with a lathe, control inputs calculated from forecasting compensatory control equations are fed to the piezoelectric translator mounted between the tool and the tool holder, in order to compensate for the machine tool structure related vibratory motion. The on-line forecasting compensatory control scheme is found to be effective in improving the surface roughness of the workpiece.
