Active magnetic bearing (AMB) is an electromagnetic device, which supports the rotor without mechanical contact by using the attractive electromagnetic force controlled by an electronic control system. Compared with the conventional bearing such as rolling element and fluid film bearings, AMB possesses several advantages such as free of contact, wear and lubrication, long service life, and built-in fault diagnostics. AMB has, thus, become an essential machine element in the modern rotating machinery, including high-speed machine tool spindle, gas turbine, turbo-molecular pump, flywheel energy storage system, and so on. In recent years, AMBs also find new applications in non-traditional areas where design and operation of the small and compact machines and devices are required, as the modern techniques in electronics materials and manufacturing processes advance so that the digital signal processor (DSP) and power amplifiers can be integrated into a compact unit. Among others, AMB is frequently applied to the miniaturized rotating machinery, including hard disk drive system and artificial heart blood pump. But, in general, five-axis AMBs consist of a pair of (four-pole) radial magnetic bearings and one axial magnetic bearing with a rotor disk placed between a pair of facing stator actuators. Each radial magnetic bearing needs four power amplifiers for a conventional four-pole AMB, and two power amplifiers are needed for the control of an axial magnetic bearing in addition to five displacement sensors and sensor amplifiers. This is the main reason why AMB is more expensive than the conventional bearing, limiting their wide application in industry.
