In last several years, a number of high speed signal processing and high capacity memory devices have been developed according to the advance of the VLSI design and fabrication technologies. The design of an image processing workstation has a tendency to use high speed signal processors and a large amount of memory devices. In this thesis, we develop of a low cost and high performance image processing workstation. The system uses up-to-date high performance DSP and graphic chips, and is interfaced with the personal computer (IBM PC/AT). This system consists of two major parts, namely, the display module and the processing module, which can operate separately. The modules are tightly coupled through the shared memory to increase the system performance. The host and sub-processors of DSP and GSP are to have execution autonomy with its own control program which maximizes the system throughput. The performance is evaluated experimentally with the FFT and convolution process which are kennel tasks in image processing. The results show that the developed system is capable of high speed image processing.
