This thesis deals with the design and implementation of two cooperative relay-based communication systems. Cooperative relay-based systems are arised by the facts that conventional cellular architecture does not meet the requirement of the very high data rates of fourth-generation (4G) wireless systems. Two different Half-duplex (HD) relaying protocols with two relays are considered in this thesis. Practical scenarios for both protocols in SISO case and SIMO cases are given. Approaches to obtain more diversity are proposed. Detailed operations of each case are described step by step. The performances of both protocols in different cases and in different relay placements are compared based on simulation results.
