Fast access scheme based on channel monitoring/assignment for IMT-2000 satellite communication system

Abstract

The satellite communication system has an advantage to support very large coverage compared with the terrestrial communication. However, it has been used broadcast services or dedicated telephone services mainly because of the long propagation delay. As the recent communication systems are developed into the third generation communication like IMT-2000 system which provides multimedia services of terminals, the protocol of satellite communication has to be changed in order to support various multimedia services together with the wide coverage. Here, the medium access control (MAC) protocol controls the access of mobile station in the wireless link and provides the random access scheme to send a short burst data via uplink channel. Therefore, the new access scheme is needed for the fast access and the reliable transmission in the consideration of the long propagation delay and different channel characteristics in satellite communication environments. In this thesis, we propose fast access schemes based on one/zero phase preamble and channel monitoring (CM) / channel assignment (CA) scheme for satellite communications. For the fast access, we use an access scheme of 3GPP2 using one/zero phase preamble instead of 3GPP using two phase preambles. And, for more reliable transmission, CM/CA scheme of 3GPP is applied. We investigate the performance of these proposed schemes through computer simulation and numerical analysis in the consideration of the propagation delay. According to analysis and simulation results, proposed schemes show the fast access, smaller delay, and higher throughput. Therefore, we could improve random access schemes for the IMT-2000 satellite communication system.
