Research interest in various forms of cooperative scheme has been growing steadily due to its cooperative diversity, which is one of the most promising solutions for the high data-rate required future wireless networks. Cooperative communication has been proposed as one of promising cooperative schemes and has attracted significant attention due to its many benefits, such as spatial diversity. Cooperative communication was originally suggested to allow single antenna mobiles to reap some of the benefits of MIMO system due to size, cost, or hardware limitations of some wireless devices, such as handsets, which may not be able to support multiple antennas. In order to obtain full diversity, multi-relay based cooperative communication schemes have been proposed, but it sacrifices spectral efficiency. Relay selection scheme, on the other hand, provides full diversity without the excessive demand on bandwidth. Network coding has recently attracted a lot of interest from both the research community due to its simple application and potential of high performance gain. Although research on network coding originally introduced on wired networks, an increasing number of works have been recently tackled the problem in wireless networks including bidirectional communications, mesh networks and wireless butterfly network. The basic principle behind network coding is to allow intermediate nodes (e.g. relay station) combine and retransmit the packets sent from different sources instead of simply forwarding them. Thus the network coding is able to save channel resources (time or bandwidth). This motivates its adoption to relay selection when two source nodes communicate. Furthermore, since the real wireless networks is interference-limited, the relay selection should be suggested based on the instantaneous signal to interference-plus-noise (SINR).
