Thanks to great advancements of Ethernet technologies, now Ethernet networks are considered as the future replacement of existing expensive large-scale networks such as SONET/SDH. Recently introduced Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) and Ethernet ring network are notable examples where Ethernet is used for large scale networks. However, as they are just introduced, they are not mature in technology. Therefore in this paper, we will focus mainly on fundamental issues of Ethernet ring networks. This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first half of this thesis, we study about Ethernet ring network design. In this part, based on investigation of traditional design issues of SOENT/SDH networks and Ethernet ring characteristics, we go over network design processes from ring topology planning to port block position planning from the views of network cost and protection provisioning. In the later half of this thesis, we optimize protection performance of Ethernet ring network. In this part, we first motivate our works by bringing up a specific phenomenon happening after ring protection, which is a traffic overshoot, and evaluate the performance of existing protection system in terms of delays and link loads. Then, we propose efficient protection systems that can reduce traffic overshoot, and we compare the performance by simulation study.
