Numerical computations of electromagnetic field problems with the governing differential equations and boundary conditions need finite element meshes. The mesh is often graded and locally refined to increase solution accuracy where the field distribution varies rapidly across the problem domain. However the generation of proper mesh is a difficult and tedius task on the user. Several automatic mesh generators such as interpolation method and Delaunay triangulation method have been developed. Even though interpolation method is useful it has difficulty to carry out local mesh refinements. The Delaunay triangulation method produces two-dimensional meshes which easily accommodate local mesh grading and local mesh refinements. However, in three-dimensional applications, this algorithm has problems such as slivers, degeneracy, and exterior boundary alteration, and has difficulty to impose local mesh restrictions which are not compatible to the Delaunay criteria. In this dissertation, a SOFT(Self-Organizing Finite-Element Tessellation) mesh generator based on self-organizing topology-preserving feature maps is introduced for two- and three-dimensional meshes. This method is capable of incorporating both the node adjustments of interpolation method and local mesh grading of Delaunay triangulation method. It is more beneficial to non-uniform meshes with local mesh restrictions which have difficulties in conventional methods. It is easy to generate non-uniform meshes with both irregular mesh topology and/or non-uniform probability density function. The SOFT algorithm can implement the local mesh refinements together with modification of neighborhood relationship of nodes. The local mesh refinements with the SOFT algorithm increase the minimum quality of meshes. Self-organized meshes with and without the SOFT algorithm are applied to the analysis of three-dimensional electromagnetic field problems, and numerical results indicate that the SOFT algorithm makes the numerica...
