This dissertation deals with the issues for the automation of a monitoring system based on the sensor planning method. As an essential function of a monitoring system, the camera should be able to observe a target object continuously during a task. However, the line-of-sight of the camera may be occluded because of the movement of the target object or the surrounding object. In order to observe the target object continuously during the operation, the camera should modify its position and orientation according to the change of the environment. In this dissertation, automatic selection and modification of the camera position is proposed. The camera position should be selected so as to guarantee for a continuous observation of the target object regardless of the motion of the target object and the surrounding object. Therefore, the camera position should be within the visibility region at which whole of the target object is visible. Moreover, for a continuous observation of the target object in a dynamic environment, fast modification of the camera configurations is required. To cope with this request, the visibility of a camera and the manipulability of an active camera system is considered simultaneously when determine the optimal camera position. To obtain visual information of the target object, the camera should be located within the visibility region. As the visibility region is dependent on the relative position of the target object and the surrounding object, the visibility region should be recalculated whenever there exists a change of the environment. For a fast computation of the visibility region, I propose a spherical projection method. In the spherical projection method, the radius of sphere is equal to the distance between the target object and the camera position assumed pre-determined. And, the projected boundary of the visibility region onto a sphere is calculated in θ-φ spaces instead of x-y-z spaces. The visibility measure is proposed as a...
