In the electromechanical systems requiring the high dynamic performances, the electrical machine should provede a controlled torque over the entire operating range. Because the induction machine is nonlinear and has the inherent coupling problem, it is difficult to durectly control the developed torque and to ensure the system stability over the entire operating range by using the scalar control methods. These difficulties can be overcome by employing the field oriented control. The principle of the field oriented control is that the orthogonal spatial angle between the field flux axis and the magnetomotive force axis is maintained without regard to the motor speed, which is called the field orientation. If the field orientation is correctly achieved, the torque is directly controlled by the torque producing component of the stator currents similar to the case of the machine. The position of the rotor fluxes in the air gap is required to achieve the field orientation in the induction machine. Therefore, the performance of the field oriented control is entirely dependent upon how correctly the rotor flux position is derived. Unfortunately, the rotor fluxes are inaccessible and thus the rotor flux observer is indispensable to realize the field oriented control in the induction machine drive system. Because the machine parameters may be changed with temperature and flux level, it is required that the rotor flux observer has the characteristics such as the fast convergence rate, the robustness against the parameter variations and the good estimation over the wide operating range. In this dissertation, a variable structure observer for the mismatched uncertain dynamical systems is proposed to improve the estimation error due to the mismatched uncertainties and the proposed methof is applied to the design of the full order flux observer for the induction machine.
