Over the past several decades, structural health monitoring(SHM) have been emerging as one of important research fields for assessing structural performance, safety and integrity. However, the displacement measurement which is one of important factor for estimating the condition of the structures was not popular due to inaccessibility of the civil infrastructures and high installation cost. In this thesis, a paired structured light system for measuring the direct displacement of large scale structures is presented. The proposed system incorporates a cheap camera, lasers and a screen and it can directly measure the relative displacement between any two selectable locations. Various simulations and experiments are performed to show the feasibility of the system. These simulations and experimental results validate that the proposed paired structured light system has the potential of leading cost-effective and robust displacement measurement system for large structures such as long-span bridges or high-rise buildings.
