Recently, the contamination of soil and groundwater by leakage from underground storage tanks (USTs) has gained increased interest. Generally, petroleum is composed of hundreds of components including BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene), the representative contaminants. For relevant management, more studies on the behavior of multi-component contaminants are necessary. However, it has not been studied extensively until these days. This dissertation researched the remediation process evaluation method based on leaching potential and monitoring technology for an integrated and reasonable management of the soil vapor extraction (SVE) process. Firstly, a simple and cost-effective risk-based process evaluation method was suggested by introducing Raoult’s law for predicting the leaching potential as well as the volatilization of multicomponent contaminants. Then, the risk-reduction characteristics during the SVE were discussed based on the leaching potential. From the experimental results, it was found that the equilibrium model and Raoult’s law had some limitations in predicting the vaporization and the leaching potential at the latter part of the SVE process. Therefore, a series of experiments were conducted to complement these limitations and understand the behavior of the contaminants. The effect of the amount of NAPLs on the leaching potential was investigated by varying the NAPLs to water ratio. The effect of soil structure, organic content, and particle size was compared to characterize the mass transfer during the SVE process. In addition, a proper monitoring technique is required to perform an efficient process management. In the present work, both effluent gas monitoring and groundwater monitoring methods were investigated. By using a ceramic gas sensor for the effluent gas monitoring, a fast and cost-effective understanding of the status of the SVE process was possible. Moreover, it is expected that this method can be used as an alternativ...
