(A) Study on the high impact strength of syndiotactic polystyrene compound with functionalized syndiotactic polystyrene = 변성 신디오탁틱 폴리스티렌을 이용한 충격특성이 향상된 신디오탁틱 폴리스티렌 수지조성물에 관한 연구

In this thesis, two kind of scheme was performed basically for the purpose of development and expansion of application area of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS). Namely, the area of enhancement of compatibilizing effect in blend composition with using modified sPS and the area of maximizing the modulus in its profit of sPS with polymerization with nano clay are the main targets of this thesis. According to these contents, this thesis is consisted of three part and five chapters. In part I, it was introduced in development status and commercial goods of sPS in chapter 1. Basic characterizations and properties of our own synthetic sPS powders were studied in chapter 2. SPS is one of the high heat resistant, high modulus, and semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastics, which are high valuable materials and consequently occupied in 2 % of total plastic market. Polyolefin and polystyrene commodity products occupied the above 50% of total plastic market. In the case of our synthetic sPS powder, syndiotacticity was above 97% in structural analysis and melting temperature was about $270^\circ C$, glass transition temperature was about $96^\circ C$ and crystallization temperature was $236\circ C$ in thermal analysis. We also tried to find out the molecular weight of sPS easily for the consistent studying of sPS blend and compound. In the other words, it was confirmed that the relationships between molecular weight and melt flow were matched in linear plot in log-log coordinates and certain melt flow rate corresponding to the proper molecular weight of sPS compound was selected in using the sPS blend study. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that antioxidant agents were added basically in sPS blend because thermal degradation was severely occurred in that high processing temperature of sPS.
