Plasma graft-polymerized membranes which have functional groups, such as sulfonic acid or carboxlyic acid were prepared to investigate the pervaporation characteristics of aqueous ethanol solution. Membranes of poly(styrenesulfonic acid) which permeate water selectively from water-ethanol mixture were prepared by plasma graft-polymerization of styrene on to porous poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) films, by sulfonation of the grafted membranes, and by ionization of the sulfonated membranes, respectively. The permselectivities of the grafted(g-PS), sulfonated(g-PSS) and sodium salt form of sulfonated(g-$PSS^{-}Na^{+}$) membranes were investigated in view of the feed composition of water-ethanol mixture, the grafted amount of polystyrene and the morphology of substrate membrane used. It was found that the permselectivity increased with the ethanol concentration in feed, that the grafted amount should be controlled for the optimum separation of water and that the membranes of sponge-like pore are more resistive to ``swelling effect`` than those of finger-like pore. But membranes of sponge-like pore show lower permeation rate than those of finger-like pore, which resulted in lower pervaporation performances. The g-$PSS^{-}Na^{+}$ membrane with grafted amount of poly(styrene) of 0.14 mg/㎠ was found to have high permeation rate of 6.6 kg/㎡hr, and good separation factor of 21 for the pervaporation of ca. 60 wt. % aqueous ethanol solution at 50℃. Membranes of poly(acrylic acid) which permeate water selectively from water/ethanol mixture were prepared by plasma graft-polymerization of acrylic acid(AA) on to porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) films. The pervaporation characteristics of the prepared membranes were investigated in view of the grafted amount of poly(acrylic acid), the feed composition, and the incorporation of different counter-ions. The Na salt form of the AA grafted membrane with grafted amount of 2.26 mg/㎠ was found to have high permeation rate of 4.9 kg/㎡h...eng
