Recently, oil/water separation has been growing widely in the spotlight because of frequent oil-spill accidents in recent years that are considered as disasters could threaten environment we live in. What is worse, it requires high cost to refine industrial oily wastewater. Therefore, it is in great need to research oil/water separation techniques to preserve the environment at low cost. Membrane-based methods are easy to scale-up and energy-efficient. In addition, they provide consistent permeate quality with high selectivity and efficiency because they can be readily used to separate continuous mixture streams. In this perspective, we present the highly-efficient oil/water separation membrane which is coated with the underwater oleophobic copolymer. The ionic cross-linked poly (4-vinyl benzyl chloride-co-2-(dimethyl amino) ethyl methacrylate) (p (VBC-co-DMAEMA)) was deposited onto stainless steel meshes via initial chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) process. The monomer DMAEMA and VBC were selected as co-monomers to render the water absorbing ability and ability to keep water layer to block oils not to pass through the membrane. Due to the formation of ionic cross-linking between amine group and halocarbon, durability and solvent resistivity were guaranteed. Using the p (VBC-co-DMAEMA) coated membrane, we obtained high flux over $230,000 L/m^2h$ and high separation efficiency up to 99.8%. Furthermore, high solvent resistivity which is important factor for a recycling of a membrane was achieved. The membrane we presented here can be applied for the surface modification of chemically stable and large scale oil/water separation membrane.
