Due to the regulation of exhausted gas and the police of increasing energy efficiency, a hybrid vehicle system has been researched worldwide. Among many hybrid types, the flywheel hybrid vehicle (FHV) has advantage in low-cost and high power performance, but limited due to the conventional powertrain system. To overcome, a novel FHV system called power-split flywheel hybrid vehicle (PS-FHV), using planetary gear systems (PGSs) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), is introduced. Since a PGS has unique degrees-of-freedom (DOF) characteristics, an active transmission can control power distribution between flywheel and engine, resulting 3-DOF with two control input: engine and a transmission. In this paper, design space and design procedure of PS-FHV, its system control, feasibility and performance is studied to show the novelty of PS-FHV.
