Expansion of network infrastructure leads to dramatically increasing network energy consumption. There have been many researches for studying minimization of energy consumption in heterogeneous network. Among these, switching off small-cell base stations is considered as efficient approach. However, frequent switching on/off small-cell base stations may cause deterioration of user’s average data rate and outage probability. Therefore, proper wake-up scheme needs to be proposed. In this paper, N-limited scheme is applied to heterogeneous network. This scheme is switching-off algorithm for a data base station in hyper cellular network, which is based on queueing model. We utilize this scheme for finding optimal number of calls for wake-up and close-down time in heterogeneous network. In escaping from queuing viewpoint, N-limited scheme is newly applied. New constraints considering characteristics of heterogeneous network is proposed, and the goal is to minimize average energy consumption. Markov chain is used for modeling the number of calls in small-cell base station coverage and operation mode. In performance evaluation, impact of system parameters on decision variables is checked.
