본 발명은 토양으로부터 분리된 신균주 사카로마이세스 세레비지에(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) KL17에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로, 갈락토오스로부터 에탄올 고생성능을 가지는 사카로마이세스 세레비지에(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) KL17 및 이를 이용한 에탄올의 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 신균주 사카로마이세스 세레비지에(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) KL17은 갈락토오스를 유일의 탄소원으로 하여 발효하는 특성을 지닌 균주로서 뛰어난 세포성장 및 에탄올 생산 효과를 가지며, 유전적으로 조작되지 않은 균주라는 점에서 높은 안정성을 가져 산업용 균주로서 적합하다.
