Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant which can be used in diverse industries such as foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Although it has many useful properties, the yield from natural source is low for meet the increasing. Therefore, the alternative methods for astaxanthin production has been required. One of the strategies is overproducing astaxanthin using genetically cost-effective and fast-growing microbes. In this thesis, the heterologous biosynthetic pathway for astaxanthin was introduced into Escherichia coli and the production amount was enhanced by metabolic engineering.
