As traffic demands have increased in decades, issues on the safety have emerged so far. To deal with these safety issues, safety data of ground and air transportation systems which are representative modes of transportation were analyzed in this study. In ground transportation system which provides the great degree of freedom to the individual drivers, extensive factors of accidents can be possible with relatively low risk. However, air transportation system which is strictly monitored in every operation is the largest high-risk controlled system with rare events in modern civilizations. Considering the distinct characteristics of each mode, appropriate analytic methods were applied in this study. Fatal Risk Factor Analysis with Data-mining Technique on the Urban Roadway Safety of Seoul Aim of this study is analyzing risk factors for urban roadway traffic accident in Korea in order to uncover the factors which contribute to the severity of human injury and to provide the foundation for effective safety policy formulation. For this purpose, 208,964 records of the Integrated Database, which is a historical accident database, established by authorities were analyzed for the period 2008-2012. After the preprocess steps for analysis, the basic statistical analysis was conducted to reveal the general trend of data. Then decision tree classifier and association rules were applied for in-detail analysis. Through the decision tree, it was revealed that vehicle type, age of pedestrian, and speed of vehicle were decisive factors for severity. However, result from association rules needed more fatal records to be trustworthy. Lastly, accuracies of models were tolerable. Based on analysis, principle of accident severity and fatal combinations of risk factors were extracted and correlations between certain factors were discussed.
