The dynamic, ever-changing nature of the mobile communication industry is a challenge for stakeholders and the research community. The rise of mobile instant messaging applications and the sudden demise of telecom companies’ (telcos’) short message service (SMS) is mega examples of the uncertainties of the industry; these scenarios clearly demonstrate how radically the mobile communication ecosystem can change. Similarly, understanding user behavior, market penetration, and the impact of messaging applications in this industry offers a challenge. There are myriad messaging applications from manufacturers and independent, third-party solution providers that are distorting the mobile communication industry. These mobile instant messaging apps allow their users to send and receive multimedia messages for free. They are fast becoming alternatives if not replacement for SMS. This development has shown the potential to obliterate SMS volume and voice call revenues for telcos. The more people buy Smartphones, the more likely they will use messaging apps, and the more likely SMS volume and voice revenue will plummet. To cope with this onslaught therefore, telcos decided in 2012 to deploy their own messaging, chat app called Joyn to win back their customers and maintain relevance in the mobile communication landscape. Unfortunately, it has since not seen any meaningful traction among users globally. Even though Joyn is an end user communication tool with instant messaging, video calling, and file transfer and is fully integrated in the device and network subscription, users are not using it as they do with other messaging apps. Trends in the mobile communication industry such as the unabated growth of ubiquitous mobile broadband access, the smart device boom, and an increasingly changing user behavior to services have orchestrated the mobile instant messaging (MIM) apps. These application services are fast adapting to users’ dynamic changes and desire to stay c...
