People use artefacts not only as the designers envisaged but also in creative ways, which is called appropriation. This study claims that views on artefact appropriation need to shift from the predominant view, where design should control use, to an egalitarian view, where design occurs every day by everyone, and this starts with the assumption that artefact appropriation has more value as a design resource compared with simply providing a resource for the design requirement. Based on the egalitarian perspective, artefact appropriation is defined as everyday design in this study. Exploration of the nature of everyday design revealed that a case of everyday design consists of meaningful components, a target, a mediator, a goal, and action, but everyday design is solitary action, which is a barrier to studying the value of everyday design as a design resource. In order to solve this problem, this study suggests designing the application where people can share their cases of everyday design and view others’ cases as well. The application helps people to recognise their existing cases and also to respect the resourcefulness of everyday design through interaction-such as viewing and commenting on others’ cases. This change influences people’s daily lives by motivating people to use their possessions in more creative ways. Based on the application, this study explored the value of everyday design in daily life by studying people’s shared cases and how it influenced their daily lives. With the results of field trials involving the application, this study revealed that three relationships-mediator-action, goal-action, and goal-mediator-have been used as resources in people’s daily lives. In addition, the creativity of shared cases is also a resource in that it motivates people to try to create more creative cases than those that currently exist. This study also investigated the value of everyday design in the process of professional design by providing professional ...eng
