Because the access network, also including metropolitan area, is a fundamental platform for the deli-very and termination of various services, future metropolitan and access networks are expected to comprise both heterogeneous optical and broadband wireless technologies with increasing demand of bandwidth-intensive and real time applications. In the optical part, Passive Optical Network (PON) is leading solution to support broadband access network while Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is being attractive solution in the wireless access part. Therefore, in this thesis, we envision and then investigate the architecture of one of these scenarios by assuming the WMN technology as a wireless access network and the PON technology to serve in the backhaul. The critical reason why we consider this architecture is capacity insufficiency of wireless back-haul. However, there has been no standardized architecture for such system, methods to operate and their related many of QoS issues need to be highlighted and accounted for. Thus, firstly, we propose a novel Wire-less-Optical Converged Network (WOCN) and its adaptive channel operating scheme with a cell planning, which is based on practical industrial in-field measurements. In this scenario, one Optical Network Unit (ONU) in the PON substitutes for many existing internet gateways and performs a role like base station. Secondly, among the many of QoS issues, major research area to be taken into account is in developing an efficient routing algorithm for the wireless front end of WOCN, so we propose and investigate the characteristics of “Delay-Aware Routing Algorithm (DARA)” that minimizes the average packet delay in the wireless front end of a WOCN along with a customized path selection algorithm that is specially-tailored for the system and basically relies on hop counts for WMN.
