KT's deployment with fiber to the home

Abstract

The competition between Telcos and cable TV operators becomes intense for the broadband Internet service market in Korea. Also, IPTV service is becoming a hot issue these days since it is recently allowed for Telcos to provide it in Korea. This paper presents the current status of broadband access network and the various FTTH(fiber to the home) technologies in Korea. It explains gigabit WDM-PON(wavelength division multiplex passive optical network) which can replace metro Ethernet in the apartment complex. It analyzes the installation costs of various access technologies including gigabit WDM-PON in the apartment complex and discusses the evolution plan of next generation access network.
